  • Leather bound copy of Sabriel

Hey all, well, this isn't really a prop, but it has an honored spot on display, so I think it counts as something I can put up here.  A while ago my wife introduced me to the Sabriel books, and I loved them.  I heard rumours that there was a limited edition available as a leatherbound version.  Rumours is all they stayed, as despite extensive searching, I could not even find so much as a picture of it.  So, I made my own.  Well, sort of.  I bought a copy of the hardback, and sent it off to some people in New York to rebind it in dark green calf leather.  I then gave it to my wife as a present, which of course she loved!

I do plan on getting the other two books in the series done in this way, but it's definitely not a cheap way of doing things!  Here's a couple of pictures, sorry if you were searching for the official leatherbound copy, but I wasn't able to find it anywhere!  If you know what it looks like I'd love to see one of the official ones!

  • Metal bio helmets!

Hey everyone!  OK, so it's been a while.  I've been working on a few things, one of which I'm going to show off today.  Metal bio helmets!  These are made with a technique called cold casting.  Metal powder is mixed with resin, and then when the final piece is pulled from the mold, it can be buffed with wire wool to a shiny metal finish.  Of course, our Predators don't have nice shiny helmets, so then we start weathering...a propane torch is applied to a few select areas, and then patina acids are brushed over the surface.  The whole thing is scrubbed down with wire wool again, and then the process is repeated.  Keep repeating until the desired finish is achieved!

If you want to see more pictures, take a look in the photo gallery, there's several of each one.

  • Celtic Predator bio review

Hey all, well I got my official Celtic bio helmet from Sideshow, and I gotta tell ya, it's definitely just about OK.

Sorry for the build up. Well, it seems Sideshow either didn't want to respond to the criticisms about the Scar bio, or just didn't have time to do anything about it, given the mass produced nature of it. They were probably mostly finished by the time the issues started popping up about quality on the Scar. I seem to have gotten a fairly average one, there are no air bubbles in the casting, and no brush bristles or human hairs marring the finish (yes, that did actually happen with the Scar). That said, the paint finish itself is terrible. A base coat of silver has been given some random weathering with a can of black spray paint by the looks of it, and they haven't been too bothered about trying to clear up the overspray.

The eye lenses are just solid resin, and suffer from the same black overspray, although I will admit there is the possibility that this was intentional. The original prop had the same look, although this was done by spraying silver paint on the inside of a clear lense. The prototype that everyone based their order on had solid silver lenses, which would have made more sense given that they seemingly never intended to put any plastic lense material in there.

The copper accent pieces don't seem to stand out and be quite as garish as they did on the promo piece, which is good. Whether they toned it down after fan complaints or they just stood out in pics, I don't know.

On the plus side, the whole thing is extremely solid and well made. The stand is great, the bio is clearly from the original mold (comparison pics below), and so it's a little disappointing to see that they've cut corners again. Hopefully the Chopper will be better.

    Anyway, pictures here.

    And compared with the original...

    And a comparison pic.

  • PREDATORS

Another Predator movie announced! This has to have been one of the most wanted things on any Predator fans list; get away from the AVP nonsense and do another movie solely about our favorite alien badass kicking some butt.

Various info has been distributed, including the fact that Robert Rodriguez is on board. He will not be directing, but from some of the press releases that I've seen, he says he will be 'helming' the movie. I suspect this means that he will come in and help direct the cool action scenes, and act as more of a producer for the rest of it. Not much detail has been released, other than RR wants to call it "Predators" which would seem to indicate a departure from the 'lone hunter' we've seen so far.

A lot has been made of the fact that he wrote a script for a Predator movie years ago, involving people who had beaten Predators before, being abducted by Predators and taken to their homeworld to fight. Sounds like a terrible idea to me, but I've been heartened by the fact that RR has said it was written purely as an exercise, with no budget restraints or similar in mind. Apparently it would have cost around $150m to make, and even though all the movies (including both AVPs) have made their money back, that sounds like an unrealistic figure.

So, here's me hoping for not too much. AVPR was a terrible let down. If they can give me something reasonably well written, with a half decent storyline, that will do. Oh yeah, and some cool props that I can collect later!

  • New Predator stuff from sideshow! It's not really one of the well known props, but it does look pretty cool. Here it is, the ceremonial dagger:

Although it wasn't really seen in many scenes, it was part of the Wolf's 'cleaner kit' that he carried on his backpack. I don't know if I'll be picking this one up, but it sure would look pretty cool next to the spear from AVP.
